Just got back from the Georgia State GOP Convention up in Dalton, and let me tell you, it was a weekend, alright. Politics ain’t for the faint of heart, is it? This past weekend at the Georgia GOP State Convention was about as smooth as a dirt road after a summer thunderstorm. But you know what? Despite the bumps, the mudslinging, and the occasional storm inside (and outside) the convention center, something pretty remarkable happened: two-thirds of the delegates stood together and elected Josh McKoon. That’s not just a win—that’s a landslide. I’ve been around this particular rodeo for a good while now, and it ain’t always a Sunday stroll in the park. You meet some fine folks, and well, you meet some others too. But you know what? My big takeaway from this go-round was actually a positive one.
Different Strokes
Now, I’ve seen some chatter online, some folks seeing things a whole lot differently than I did, even though we’re supposedly wearin’ the same team jersey. That’s bound to happen when passionate people get together, I reckon. One post I saw, shared by a friend, painted a picture of the convention that sounded like something out of a Dickens novel, if Dickens had covered Southern political wranglings. Talk of “evil personified” and folks gettin’ sick to their stomachs… mercy.
Here’s what I saw: Despite what might be the most thankless, frustrating, and downright difficult volunteer job on God’s green earth, good people are still stepping up. They’re putting their names in the hat for GA GOP Executive Committee spots, ready to pour their time and energy into serving. For that, I am profoundly grateful. These folks are answering a call to service, filling vital roles in this Constitutional Republic of ours, and they deserve a heapin’ helpin’ of appreciation.
Speaking of Good Folks
Speakin’ of good folks, a big ol’ congratulations to our new Chairman, Josh McKoon! When nearly two-thirds of the delegates – folks from every corner of this beautiful state – make a choice, that’s what we call “Too Big To Rig,” plain and simple. That’s a powerful statement from the grassroots, and it speaks volumes. I haven’t heard a lot of mudslingin’ from Josh about his opponent, but I sure have heard some wild tales comin’ from the other direction about him and our Grand Old Party. Let’s stick to the facts and the overwhelming will of the delegates.
Let’s give credit where it’s due: Our nominating committee—patriots from every corner of Georgia—worked their tails off. They put in the hard work, deliberated, and came forward with their report. To hear ’em booed when they presented their findings… well, that just ain’t right, folks. They should be commended for their diligence, not heckled. It was also a bit disheartening to see a couple of candidates use their time at the mic to, shall we say, air grievances against that strong majority and our established processes. Made me think the delegates made the right call, if you catch my drift. Our Grand Old Party has processes for a reason, and they were followed.
What About Paper Ballots
And while there’s been a lot of chatter about paper ballots versus clickers, here’s what really matters: Our process worked. The majority spoke. And if we’re gonna beat the Democrats, we’ve gotta trust the system and each other. I’d sure like to understand more about how much safer they truly are compared to our clickers, what it would mean for the time it takes to get things done, and, let’s be honest, what it’d do to the budget. Good questions to ask, I think, as we always strive to make our processes better and more secure.
At the end of the day, we’ve got two big fish to fry: electing a conservative governor and sending a conservative U.S. Senator to Washington. And with leaders like Josh McKoon at the helm, I believe we’re in good hands. So let’s dust off our boots, shake off the drama, and get back to work—because Georgia’s future is worth fighting for, y’all.
