Should We Pre-Hate, or Pre-Hope?

Posted February 27, 2025 – A Thought from the Heart of Dixie

Hey there, friends! I’ve been tossing around some thoughts lately—thank you, late-night TV! You know, this whole idea of “pre-hating” someone, particularly when it comes to figures like Trump, got me to pondering. Seems like we’re living in a world where folks are so riled up, they’re ready to hate something before it even happens. Shoot, they might even be willing to cut off their nose to spite their face, if it means sticking it to the “other side.”

Let’s be honest here. Powerful folks with deep pockets have spent billions on media campaigns to shape how we think, feel, and react. And let’s not kid ourselves—some of that influence has been downright divisive. It’s like we’ve been handed a script: Hate this person. Hate their actions. Hate everything they stand for. But here’s the thing: when we let hate into our hearts and minds, it doesn’t just hurt the person we’re hating—it hurts us. “Holding onto hate is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”

Now, I’m coming at this from two angles: as a humanist and through the lens of a biblical worldview. – From an atheist perspective, our brief existence in this vast universe is too precious to waste on pre-hating anything or anyone. Science shows that hate literally changes our brain chemistry and stress hormones – and not in a good way, folks.

On the other hand, if you’re lookin’ at this from a biblical worldview, forgiveness is key. Proverbs 10:12 tells us, “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.” Or how about Matthew 5:44, where Jesus says, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” That’s some hard advice, but it’s also a reminder that hate only breeds more hate, while love and understanding can heal. Forgiveness is not just about others; it’s about us too. It frees us from the chains of bitterness and resentment, allowing us to move forward with peace and love (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Now, I know what some of y’all are thinking: “Dean, that fella (Trump) has done some things I don’t agree with!” And you know what? You’re probably right! We all make mistakes, Lord knows I’ve made my fair share, I ain’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

Let’s take a moment to reflect. History is chock-full of humans who have stumbled and fallen—sometimes spectacularly—before rising to become heroes. Think about it! People like Abraham Lincoln, who navigated his fair share of blunders before leading our nation through its darkest days, or even Martin Luther King Jr., who faced immense scrutiny in his pursuit of justice before becoming a beacon of hope. Or George Washington, who started as a British loyalist before leading the American Revolution. Or even the Apostle Paul, who went from persecutin’ Christians to spreadin’ the Gospel. It shows us that anyone can change and make a difference. Heck, even Benjamin Franklin was quite the rabble-rouser in his youth!. Aren’t we all just a little flawed? Wouldn’t it be grand if we could channel that realization into understanding rather than hate?

As we venture through life, I encourage y’all to look inward. It’s a powerful thing to honestly ask ourselves if we’re letting the opinions of well-funded entities guide our thoughts and actions. Imagine the difference we could make if we chose faith over hate, believing that good can prevail!

As the saying goes, “Haters are gonna hate,” but we have the power to choose love. Ultimately, let’s try and show a little grace, a little understanding, and a little hope for the future. Of course, it’s easy for me to say. However, I’d encourage everyone to take a moment to examine their heart and see whether hate or love lives there.

Let’s all strive to be a little more LUKE (Love, Understanding, Kindness, and Empathy) – because, y’all, hate might be easier, but love makes a darn sight better world to live in. So, let’s tip our hats to the haters, smile sweetly, and choose love, every darn time.

In the end, it’s up to each and every one of us to choose love over hate, hope over despair. Let’s be the kind of folks who lift each other up, who believe in second chances, and who have faith that, despite the noise, the good in this world will shine through.

So, let’s challenge ourselves to rise above the noise. Let’s choose understanding over animosity, growth over grudges, and hope over hate. Because at the end of the day, we’re all just humans trying to do our best in a complicated world. And maybe, just maybe, the world could use a little more grace.

Join me in this journey of compassion and understanding, and you might find that wonderful things are waiting just around the corner!

Y’all stay blessed, and remember: hate’s a heavy burden to carry, but love? Love’ll set you free.🙏🏽✨
