The Twilight Zone, Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and Land O Lakes

Posted November 16, 2024 – Well, folks, here we are. The dust has settled from the November 5th election, and if you’re anything like me, you feel as if you’ve just walked out of an episode of The Twilight Zone. You know the one—where everything seems bizarrely familiar yet strangely unpredictable? You think you’ve got a grip on reality, and then, bam! You’re face-to-face with something that makes you question what in the world just happened.

America’s recent election results, which brought about a sizable sigh of relief from a significant number of citizens, put the country on a path that feels reminiscent of a twisty narrative crafted by the late, great Rod Serling himself. For many of us, it feels like we’re stepping out of a dystopian chapter and into a narrative that seems, at last, to resonate with the values that many hold dear. And speaking of values, let’s talk about Aunt Jemima, Land O’ Lakes, and Uncle Ben.

Now, I’m not suggesting we abandon good taste or sensitivity; heaven knows we need to navigate these waters with care! But there’s a sense of nostalgia brewing in the hearts of many grateful voters who found comfort in those familiar faces that once graced our syrup bottles and butter packages. Just like Serling wove tales of the absurd into our everyday lives, those brand images remind us of simpler times, moments shared over pancakes, and family gatherings where the food was just as much a part of the experience as the folks around the table. Can we please, for the love of all things good, get Aunt Jemima’s picture back on that syrup bottle? And while we’re at it, how ’bout the Indian on the Land O Lakes butter? Not to mention Uncle Ben back on our rice? These symbols of American comfort food are just that – symbols of the America we love. No need for all that PC nonsense.

Perhaps this election is a reminder that even amidst uncertainty, there’s a unifying spirit yearning to celebrate our traditions. The majority felt that we needed to reclaim what had felt lost—not just the graphics on our grocery store favorites but the very essence of what it means to be American. The results whisper of hope in a landscape that has at times felt surreal, like stepping into the shadowy realm of Rod Serling’s signature storytelling.

But let’s be clear: this isn’t an outright call to ignore the conversations of our time. Just as The Twilight Zone challenged its viewers to confront the confrontational, we must engage in thoughtful dialogue. We’re all part of this narrative—we’re citizens, voters, and voices that make up a diverse fabric known as the United States. As we maneuver these tricky waters, let’s remember that it is not simply about rehashing the past but finding ways to weave our narratives together into a future where everyone feels represented and heard.

It’s like that one “Twilight Zone” episode where the main character wakes up in a world that’s just like his own, but with all the familiar faces and places somehow… off. That’s what these past few years have felt like. But now, I reckon we’re back on track.

So, as we revel in the outcome of November 5th, let’s raise a glass of Aunt Jemima’s finest syrup in a toast—to the grateful majority, to our shared love of the good ole American traditions, and to the wondrous, sometimes twisted journey we find ourselves on in this beautiful but baffling country. Let’s embrace the hope that shines brighter with every vote cast, every voice raised, and every story shared. And who knows? Maybe we’ll even see a few familiar faces back on our store shelves.

After all, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, sometimes all we need is a little bit of that nostalgic magic—and just maybe, we can avoid drifting into the shadows of the Twilight Zone once more.

To all my fellow grateful Americans out there, thank you for seein’ us through these wild times. Now, let’s get back to the business of bein’ the greatest nation on earth!
